Golf Rule(s) of the Week: May 14

Taking Relief Free relief is allowed for abnormal course conditions, including immovable obstructions. An example of this would be if your ball lands in a French drain, or you must stand in the French drain to hit your ball. If you choose to take relief, you must take full relief and you are allowed to drop your ball, from knee height, within one club length no closer to the hole after taking your stance. You must remain in the same general area, so if you are taking relief from a drain in the rough, you must drop in the rough. Unplayable Ball Trees and bushes are not considered obstructions. If your ball is next to a tree, under, or in a bush, you may choose to take an Unplayable Ball Relief. For one penalty stroke you may:

1. Play the original ball or another ball where the previous stroke was made; 2. Drop the original ball or another ball behind the spot of the original ball, keep the spot of the original ball between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped (with no limit as to how far back the ball may be dropped); 3. Drop the original ball or another ball in a lateral relief area which is measured two club lengths but no nearer than the hole and within the same general area of the course the original ball was resting.
